To avoid frustrations and giving up in losing weight, it is important for a person to have the proper state of mind. The best way of losing weight will be based on what works for you and not on what is written on some book because there is no universal way of losing weight. You will reach your goals faster if you do the things that work for you and discard the things that are not really working out.
Trying out new things is the best thing to do if you are not sure about the things that will work because you have tried losing weight before. Here are some tips that you can use to find your niche in the workout industry that will help you reach your goals.
Try a new gym
Gyms maybe a cliché for people trying to lose weight but this is the logical place to start if you haven\'t tried it before. If you don\'t have a goal yet, you should look into making some so that you will have something to aim for when working out in the gym.
Look for a sport that you like
Sports are another fun activity that you can add to your weekly routine because going to the gym alone can become monotonous. You can play an old sport you enjoyed in the past or you can learn new ones that looks interesting to you.
Look for a diet plan
Many people\'s response when they need to lose weight is to eat less to the point of starving themselves.Fortunately, many people have found diet regimens that worked for them without the need for a hunger strike.
A very good example of this kind of diet regimen that is becoming popular is paleo diet.In this type of diet, you are simulating the
diet of ancient men.   Everything farmed or industrially produced are to be avoided.
If you want to find out what you can and you can\'t eat in the paleo diet, you can look it up in a Paleo Recipe Book.Paleo Recipe Books also list down what foods available in the market are allowed to be eaten and the ways to prepare these foods. You could use PaleoRecipeBooks.net as your source.

The Paleo diet is not without flaws, but it is undeniably healthy. It is a sensible eating plan that can provide numerous benefits, and weight loss is just one of them.

Eye strain from Computer Useage

Author: Michelle Costanza Weis
For those of us who work in an office and spend most of the day in our cubicles, one of the most common ailments we have been subjected to is eye strain due to long hours of sitting at our desks and staring at our computer monitors. By listening to our bodies and knowing how to combat the discomfort caused by eyestrain, we can allow ourselves to be more productive while working.
The technical name for eyestrain due to computer usage is called Computer Vision Syndrome (or CVS). People who suffer from CVS will feel any number of the following at the same time or at different intervals:
When working some people are prone to keeping their eyes open too long or not blinking enough; focussing too much puts way too much pressure on the eye muscles surrounding the eyes. And a lack of blinking will dehydrate the area creating sore, tired or 'itchy eyes'. When a person is fatigued, it\'s possible that the eyes will begin to water. This typically happens late at night just before retiring for the evening. But the same kind of fatigue is caused by working long hours as well. And just the opposite can happen! The lack of blinking will cause dry eyes which gets worse if contact lenses are worn.
All of that brain power in combination with working long hours and staring at a monitor may even cause some people to have blurred vision or the inability to focus easily. Yet a more common symptom of over work is to suffer from headaches. Headaches are usually caused by a combination of symptoms all sourced from eye strain which include and are not limited to neck strain, back and shoulder pain.
An increase in sensitivity to light in combination with difficulty focussing is also a symptom cause by CVS. Most offices use fluorescent lighting which gives off a white almost bluish hue that is unnatural and makes it difficult for us to focus. The use of other digital electronic devices can cause many of these symptoms as well.
Adjust the lighting in your office. First, do a 'light test' by cupping your hands above and around your eyes, much like the way a baseball hat would shelter them. If you notice a huge difference once you remove your hands, it may be wise to get a table top desk lamp. Tweak the settings of your monitor by adjusting the brightness and contrast, and font size until you find something that is comfortable for you. The preset factory setting is not for everyone. Minimize the glare coming from your monitor by installing anti-glare filters or adjusting your office window shades.
Remember to give your eyes a break at least every two hours. Get up and away from your desk, focus on something other than a monitor. Exercise your eyes by looking up and down and to the left and right, roll your eyes clockwise and counter-clockwise a few times. Give yourself a little TLC by massaging your eyelids, temples and eyebrows. Blink your eyes often and use eye drops occasionally.
Fear not! There\'s a way to fight all of these symptoms. They key is to be aware of what\'s around you and to listen to your body. Start first by getting a comprehensive eye exam. If these remedies don\'t work to relieve your eyestrain symptoms, make an appointment to see your eye doctor. Your eye discomfort could be reoccuring due to a need for prescription glasses. These days buying eyeglasses online is affordable and easy if your have your eyeglasses prescription. Be sure to invest in an anti-glare coating!

Can Vitamins Really Help Me Grow Healthy Hair

Author: Eddie Yakubovich
An important factor most people overlook when they discuss a thinning or hair loss problem is nutrition. The modern diet for most of us is lacking at best. We should supplement our diets with vitamin and mineral supplementation. Even those of us who really watch what we eat, may not be getting enough of the key nutrient necessary for healthy hair growth. Getting proper nutrition is vital to healthy hair growth, while your body needs a variety of nutrients to maintain proper body functions, there are a handful that are key to hair growth and health.

First we need to caution you that when starting a new vitamin regime, consistency is very important. You also need to be patient, it normally takes from 2 to 3 months to see results in your hair\'s condition. It\'s also important to check with your doctor before starting a vitamin program, especially if you have health concerns.

Now that we have set a few parameters and made our cautionary statements, let look at some of the more important vitamins when it comes to hair health in no specific order. In an attempt to be as useful as possible we will list the vitamin, any good food sources, and a recommended daily dose for supplementation:

1. Vitamin A - Antioxidant that helps produce healthy sebum in the scalp. Food sources: Fish liver oil, meat, milk, cheese, eggs, spinach, carrots, apricots and peaches. Daily Dose: 5,000 IU.

2. Vitamin C - Antioxidant that helps maintain skin & hair health. Food sources: Citrus fruits, strawberries, pineapple, tomatoes, green peppers, potatoes and dark green vegetables. Daily Dose: 60 mg.

3. Vitamin E - Antioxidant that enhances scalp circulation. Food sources: Cold-pressed vegetable oils, wheat germ oil, soybeans, raw seeds and nuts, dried beans, and leafy green vegetables. Daily dose: Up to 400 IU. Warnings: Can raise blood pressure and reduce blood clotting. People taking high blood pressure medication or anticoagulants should check with their doctors before taking Vitamin E supplements.

4. Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5) - Prevents graying and hair loss. Food sources: Whole grain cereals, brewer\'s yeast, organ meats and egg yolks. Daily dose: 4-7 mg.

5. Vitamin B6 - Prevents hair loss, helps create melanin, which gives hair its color. Food sources: Brewer\'s yeast, liver, whole grain cereals, vegetables, organ meats and egg yolk. Daily dose: 1.6 mg. Vitamin B12 - Prevents hair loss. Food sources: Chicken, fish, eggs and milk. Daily dose

6. Biotin - Helps produce keratin, may prevent graying and hair loss. Food sources: Brewer\'s yeast, whole grains, egg yolks, liver, rice and milk. Daily dose: 150-300 mcg.

7. Inositol - Keeps hair follicles healthy at the cellular level. Food sources: Whole grains, brewer\'s yeast, liver and citrus fruits. Daily Dose: Up to 600 mg.

8. Niacin (Vitamin B3) - Promotes scalp circulation. Food sources: Brewer\'s yeast, wheat germ, fish, chicken, turkey and meat. Daily dose: 15 mg.

9. Biotin - Helps produce keratin, may prevent graying and hair loss. Food sources: Brewer\'s yeast, whole grains, egg yolks, liver, rice and milk. Daily dose: 150-300 mcg.

10. Inositol - Keeps hair follicles healthy at the cellular level. Food sources: Whole grains, brewer\'s yeast, liver and citrus fruits. Daily Dose: Up to 600 mg.

I hope this give you at least a basic understanding of what vitamins can help with hair thinning and or hair loss problems. There are many other products available that can be helpful. There are several prescription drug regimes to try, so take the time to speak with your doctor. There are also many herbal and natural hair growth remedies available without a prescription, we believe strongly that you should also discuss these products with your doctor.

It's Time to Give up Smoking!

Whether you are a real smoker or an occasional one, young or old, it\'s never too late to quit, even if you have already tried to several times. Some tricks may come in handy.

Most people who smoke say they would like to quit smoking, but when it comes to actual facts, they give up. Why? The reasons are numerous: they have a hard time learning new habits, they worry about gaining weight, but most of all because at first they might feel bad and experience withdrawals. Like any addiction, nicotine is pretty hard to beat, but not impossible.

Even the authorities are helping: 'European lawmakers are trying to tighten rules governing the multi-billion dollar tobacco market by imposing bigger and bolder warnings on cigarette packs, banning most flavorings like menthol and beefing up regulation of electronic cigarettes', says an ABC News report. Since treatment for smoke-related diseases costs about $34 billion a year and the EU estimates that there are around 700,000 smoking-related deaths annually worldwide, it makes sense to consider quitting smoking.

'We need to stop tobacco companies from targeting young people with an array of gimmicky products and we need to make sure that cigarette packs carry effective warnings', stated Linda McAvan, the Labour MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, and a spokesperson on tobacco issues for the Parliament\'s Socialist and Democrat group.

So, here are some tips that will help you in the battle against cigarettes.
1. Establish clear objectives
When it comes to quitting a habit, the first thing you need to think about is motivation: why do you want to smoke? Do you have a health problem? Do you have a relative who passed away due to a smoke-related disease and now you\'re scared? Are you spending too much money on cigarettes? Do you want to protect your family\'s health? You need a personal reason and the generic 'it\'s bad for you' will not do the trick.

2. Get help
For some, quitting is easy because they have a strong motivation. But, for others, this process can be really difficult, despite the motivation. Do not be afraid to ask for the support of your family and friends. Ask people who smoke around you not to do that.

3. Find alternative means of relaxation
If you ask a smoker why he smokes, they will likely tell you it helps relieve stress. So, instead of turning to a cigarette when you\'re feeling angry, try to look for alternative means: breathing exercises, relaxing music, or a walk in the park.

4. Discover new activities
If idle hands are the devil\'s playground, then you need to keep yourself busy all the time with challenging activities. Help your partner clean the house, take up a hobby, or join a gym. There are so many things you can do in order to stop thinking about smoking.

5. Spend the money you save
When you realize how much money you can save by quitting this habit and that you can afford to buy something that you have wanted for a long time, you will see it really pays off to quit smoking.

Health Benefits of Male Circumcision

Male circumcision is the removal of some or the entire foreskin or prepuce from the penis. Male circumcision is widely practice among Muslims world-wide. It is also a religious injunction ( a positive commandment) in Judaism. However, this practice is wide spread among Christians and Muslims in some part of Africa especially Nigeria, possibly due to cultural reasons. For the Muslims it stated in the Hadiths. Among the Christians it is only customary among the Coptic, Ethiopian, and Eritrean Orthodox Churches, and also some other African churches while the Roman Catholic Church is neutral on it.

The first recorded case of male circumcision was among the Egyptians 3000B.C, evidence from the mummies showed all the male mummies are circumcised. It was also practiced among the Babylonians, Colchians and the Moabites. Among this ancient tribes it may be have practice with ritualistic purpose, however the practice attain a religious status with the Jews who see it as a necessary religious practice. The advent of rapid scientific advance may be the first time hygienic reason was ascribe to the practice.

Male circumcision is a popular culture in many societies and the first documented evidence can be dated to as far as the ancient Egypt. Certain society practices it as a ritualistic requirement for a boy to be initiated into manhood like the one describe in Carama Laye‘s book- African Child. This is particularly done on young adolescents. However among the Muslims and many Nigerian tribes it done in childhood, around the first week among the Yorubas while the Kanuri does it in children as old as 6 years. Infant circumcision is also popular USA and English speaking part of Canada. Why it is popular USA may not be unconnected with the fact foreskin is perceive to be dirty and it removal as a means of preventing masturbation.

Some US physicians even strongly advocated for it in early 1900. According to National Hospital Discharge Survey data from the National Center for Health Statistics in US was about 60% infant circumcision rate.

It is a global practice with a world-wide rate of about 30%. In many Western African countries is a common practice i.e. universal, not doing it is rare, so also in Middle East and North Africa. The rate of male circumcision in USA is about 85% among males.

Male circumcision has hygienic benefit in fact that that is a major reason it is a practice in some Western countries. The skin of the glans penis (the free end of the penis) secrete a material called smegma, this substance encourage the growth of bacterial and infection if allow to accumulate. To avoid such the uncircumcised would need to wash the foreskin and glans penis regularly, it mean retracting the foreskin to wash the skin underneath. This retraction can be difficult and painful to do a time.

Recent evidence have emerge that the practice has been associated with a lower risk for HIV male-to-female transmission compared to when the individual is not circumcised. However this does not suggest that the prevention strategy like abstinence, consistent and correct condom usage etc. should be discarded or unnecessary. Nigerians circumsize but their is still HIV infection around.

In addition it help to reduce the cost of having to treat medical conditions like phimiosis, balanoposthitis, balanitis  and paraphimosis. These condition are common among the circumscribed. There are also increase risk of sexually transmitted genital ulcer disease and chlamydia, infant urinary tract infections, penile cancer, and cervical cancer in female partners of uncircumcised men. It also reduces the risk of penile cancer. It has been described as a surgical vaccine by some scholar because of the role it plays in penile cancer prevention.

Male circumcision is even beneficial to the female sexual partner of the circumcised. Those women tend to have substantial protection from genital herpes, cervical cancer, bacterial vaginosis, possibly Chlamydia (that can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy), and other infections.

It is not that male circumcision does not have adverse effects however minimal it needs to be mentioned. The benefit to risk is like 100 to 1. The risks, benefits to sexual partner of the circumcised, commonly asked questions and best timing for male circumcision would be discussed in subsequent update. There would also some information of the argument of the emerging groups against male circumcision.

Keep Your Kidneys Healthy

Catch Kidney Disease Early
Your kidneys aren’t very big—each is about the size of your fist—but they do important work. They keep
you healthy by maintaining just the right balance of water and other substances inside your body.

Unfortunately, if your kidneys start to malfunction, you might not realize it for a long while. Kidney disease usually doesn’t make you feel sick until the problem becomes serious and irreversible. March is National Kidney Month, a perfect time to learn more about how to keep your kidneys healthy and how to catch problems early.

Your kidneys are 2 reddish, bean-shaped organs located on either side of your spine in the middle of your back. Their main job is to filter your blood. Each kidney contains about a million tiny filters that can process around 40 gallons of fluid every day—about enough to fill a house’s hot water heater. When blood passes through the kidney, the filters sift and hold onto the substances your body might need, such as certain nutrients and much of the water. Harmful wastes and extra water and nutrients are routed to the nearby bladder and flushed away as urine.

Your kidneys also produce several hormones. These hormones help to control your blood pressure, make red blood cells and activate vitamin D, which keeps your bones strong.
We all lose a little of our kidney function as we get older. People can even survive with just one kidney if they donate the other to a friend or family member.

But when kidney function drops because of an underlying kidney disease, it’s something to be concerned about. Toxins and extra water can build up in your blood. Falling hormone production can cause other problems. About 1 in 10 adults nationwide, or about 20 million people, have at least some signs of kidney damage.

There are different types of kidney disease. Most strike both kidneys at the same time, harming the tiny filters—called nephrons—and reducing their filtering ability. When damage to nephrons happens quickly, often because of injury or poisoning, it’s known as acute kidney injury. It’s more common, though, for nephrons to worsen slowly and silently for years or even decades. This is known as chronic kidney disease.

“Most people have few or no symptoms until chronic kidney disease is very advanced,” says Dr. Andrew Narva, a kidney specialist at NIH. “You can lose up to three-fourths of your kidney function and essentially have no symptoms.”

Chronic kidney disease can strike people of any race, but African Americans are especially at risk. African Americans also tend to have high rates of diabetes and high blood pressure, the 2 leading causes of kidney disease. Other risk factors for kidney disease include heart disease and a family history of kidney failure—a severe form of kidney disease.

If you have these risk factors, it’s important to be screened for kidney disease,” says Narva. “That usually involves simple laboratory tests: a urine test to look for kidney damage, and a blood test to measure how well the kidneys are working.”

The urine test checks for a protein called albumin, which isn’t routinely detected when your kidneys are healthy. The blood test checks your GFR—glomerular filtration rate. GFR is an estimate of your kidney’s filtering ability. A GFR below 60 is a sign of chronic kidney disease. A GFR below 15 is described as kidney failure.

“I tell my patients they should know their numbers,” says NIH kidney expert Dr. Jeffrey B. Kopp. “We usually cannot cure chronic kidney disease, but if we catch it early, we can slow down its progression.”
Without treatment, kidney disease often gets worse. If your GFR drops below 15, you may feel tired and weak, with nausea, vomiting and itching. By that point, you may need a kidney transplant or dialysis. It’s a good idea to talk with your doctor about the possibility of these therapies long before they’re needed. It takes time to understand your options, and it’s easier to figure things out when you’re feeling healthy.
“In general, the preferred therapy for kidney failure is to have a kidney transplant, but not everyone can have a transplant,” says Kopp. Some obstacles include long waiting lists for healthy kidneys and finding a well-matched donor.

Dialysis is a treatment that filters wastes and water from the blood, allowing patients with kidney failure to feel better and continue with everyday activities. NIH kidney specialist Dr. Paul Kimmel leads an NIH program to improve the lives of patients on dialysis. “Although dialysis is a life-saving therapy, it can be challenging for patients and families,” Kimmel says. “We’re encouraging researchers to explore innovative ways to improve the quality of life and long-term outcome for these patients.”

You can take many steps to avoid or delay reaching the point of kidney failure. The best thing you can do is control your blood pressure. A healthy lifestyle, including physical activity and a heart-healthy diet, can help to normalize blood pressure and also slow kidney disease.

“Most Americans eat more sodium and protein than the body needs. It’s your kidneys’ job to filter and get rid of the leftovers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” says registered dietitian Theresa Kuracina, who advises NIH on kidney health and nutrition. Healthy kidneys can generally handle the workload. “But if you have kidney damage, too much sodium and protein can have a negative effect,” Kuracina says. “We generally recommend eating less sodium and more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. To reduce fats, choose lean meats and low-fat or fat-free dairy products.”

If you have kidney disease, your health care provider may recommend additional changes to your diet. And if lifestyle changes aren’t enough to slow down kidney damage, your doctor may prescribe medications to reduce blood pressure, control blood glucose and lower your cholesterol.

Don’t wait to take the first step to keep your kidneys healthy. Talk to your health care provider about your kidneys, and ask if you should be tested for kidney disease.

Young Adult Obesity May Affect Later Heart Disease

Fat Lady Icon
The longer a young adult is obese, the greater the chance of developing heart disease in middle age, a new study reports. The finding hints that preventing or even delaying the onset of obesity might help reduce heart disease in later years.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death nationwide, and obesity boosts the risk for heart disease. Past studies have linked both body mass index (BMI)—a ratio of weight to height—and waist circumference to heart disease risk. However, few studies have looked at whether the length of time a person is obese affects heart disease as well.

To learn more, a team led by NIH’s Dr. Jared Reis studied more than 3,200 young adults, ages 18 to 30, who weren’t obese at the start of the study. The subjects were followed over a 25-year period to see if and when they became obese and for how long. Heart scans looked for calcium deposits in their coronary arteries, an early warning sign of heart disease. These calcifications can arise long before symptoms are noticed—a condition called silent heart disease.

About 40% of the adults became obese during the study. Over 38% of those who were obese for more than 2 decades developed coronary artery calcification. In contrast, only about 25% of those who never became obese developed calcification. The scientists calculated that each year a young adult is obese raises that person’s risk of developing silent heart disease by 2-4%.

People in the U.S. are becoming obese at younger ages, and more than one-third of adults are obese.

“I think our findings really suggest that if we don’t measure obesity duration in addition to BMI and waist circumference, we may be underestimating the health risks of obesity,” Reis says.

Smoking out Good Health

"One thousand Americans stop smoking everyday-by dying"

                                                        AUTHOR UNKNOWN

Smoking that mean to say taking or habit of taking cigarette, cigar and other form of tobacco products is a major and recurrent issue in our present World. It  started centuries ago when aborigines of American sub-continent and Australia chewed tobacco. It become worldwide phenomenon after Sir Raleigh introduced it into English Royal court. Subsequently, habit of taking cigarette, cigar and pipe spread with English imperialist conquest around the world.

By 2000,there are about 1.1 billion smokers worldwide and 943 millions are in Developing Countries. Many reasons people give for smoking or given why people smoke range from coping with life pressure, peer pressure, in order  to  forget their problems ,justifying  the belief that everybody is taking it, boredom, curiosity and ignorance among others. But put in another way the addiction from tobacco taking particularly smoking of cigarette is in this pattern. You take one stick and you want to take another,(craving) and when you take another, you want to yet take another. And in this way you are experiencing what  is  scientifically refer to as TOLERANCE,PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPENDENCE.

So for one reason or the other you light a stick of cigarette and in that combustion you generate 4000 chemical substances, which goes into the system. Chiefly, among them are nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. The effect boomerang not in a day or two in most cases, it manifest latter in life as cancer of many part of the body most especially lung and upper part of the airway. Other effects are heart diseases, chronic bronchitis(related to the lung) and deleterious effect on pregnancy which range from low birth-weight of the child, spontaneous abortion, premature delivery and showing of physical and mental development in children of mother that smokes. Memory problems are not left out, so also production of abnormal spermatozoa in adult males that smokes.

And these generate a startling statistic-10,000 people die from smoking everyday. Maybe something would kill us, as some people would say.But the poser is that why allow what could be prevented kill us.Which unfortunately is an activity so commonly encouraged by availability of tobacco products and money to push it around the world by rich multinational tobacco companies.

Maybe  let stop and examine what smokers say, particularly nudged on by emerging scientific findings which show that it reduces incidence of Parkinson’s disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease and minimally in Alzeihmer’s Disease.

Could the benefit ever outweigh the risk, particularly the risk to the smoker and the people around him from second hand smoke.Second hand smoke is significantly injurious to innocent bystanders.A quitter of smoking reduce his risk of smoking-related shortening of life expectancy related disease and lost of man hour from such disease among other things.

A quitting Government is also very important. It is not enough for health authorities world-wide to enforce placing of warning on tobacco pack or advert.More punitive measures have to be taken which goes beyond the aforementioned one and slamming greater tax on tobacco products. Oxford medical companion a medical text summed it well-a cigarette is the only legally  available consumer product which kills people when it is entirely used as intended.

Medical errors can occur anywhere in the health care system: In hospitals, clinics, surgery centers, doctors' offices, nursing homes, pharmacies, and patients' homes. Errors can involve medicines, surgery, diagnosis, equipment, or lab reports. These tips tell what you can do to get safer care.
One in seven Medicare patients in hospitals experience a medical error. But medical errors can occur anywhere in the health care system: In hospitals, clinics, surgery centers, doctors' offices, nursing homes, pharmacies, and patients' homes. Errors can involve medicines, surgery, diagnosis, equipment, or lab reports. They can happen during even the most routine tasks, such as when a hospital patient on a salt-free diet is given a high-salt meal.
Most errors result from problems created by today's complex health care system. But errors also happen when doctors* and patients have problems communicating. These tips tell what you can do to get safer care.
What You Can Do to Stay Safe
The best way you can help to prevent errors is to be an active member of your health care team. That means taking part in every decision about your health care. Research shows that patients who are more involved with their care tend to get better results.
Medicines
  1. Make sure that all of your doctors know about every medicine you are taking.
This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements, such as vitamins and herbs.

  2. Bring all of your medicines and supplements to your doctor visits.
"Brown bagging" your medicines can help you and your doctor talk about them and find out if there are any problems. It can also help your doctor keep your records up to date and help you get better quality care.

  3. Make sure your doctor knows about any allergies and adverse reactions you have had to medicines.
This can help you to avoid getting a medicine that could harm you.
  4. When your doctor writes a prescription for you, make sure you can read it.
If you cannot read your doctor's handwriting, your pharmacist might not be able to either.
  5. Ask for information about your medicines in terms you can understand—both when your medicines are prescribed and when you get them:
    • What is the medicine for?
    • How am I supposed to take it and for how long?
    • What side effects are likely? What do I do if they occur?
    • Is this medicine safe to take with other medicines or dietary supplements I am taking?
    • What food, drink, or activities should I avoid while taking this medicine?
  6. When you pick up your medicine from the pharmacy, ask: Is this the medicine that my doctor prescribed?
  7. If you have any questions about the directions on your medicine labels, ask.
Medicine labels can be hard to understand. For example, ask if "four times daily" means taking a dose every 6 hours around the clock or just during regular waking hours.
  8. Ask your pharmacist for the best device to measure your liquid medicine.
For example, many people use household teaspoons, which often do not hold a true teaspoon of liquid. Special devices, like marked syringes, help people measure the right dose.
  9. Ask for written information about the side effects your medicine could cause.
If you know what might happen, you will be better prepared if it does or if something unexpected happens.
Hospital Stays
  1. If you are in a hospital, consider asking all health care workers who will touch you whether they have washed their hands.
Handwashing can prevent the spread of infections in hospitals.
  2. When you are being discharged from the hospital, ask your doctor to explain the treatment plan you will follow at home.
This includes learning about your new medicines, making sure you know when to schedule follow-up appointments, and finding out when you can get back to your regular activities.
It is important to know whether or not you should keep taking the medicines you were taking before your hospital stay. Getting clear instructions may help prevent an unexpected return trip to the hospital.

  1. If you are having surgery, make sure that you, your doctor, and your surgeon all agree on exactly what will be done.
Having surgery at the wrong site (for example, operating on the left knee instead of the right) is rare. But even once is too often. The good news is that wrong-site surgery is 100 percent preventable. Surgeons are expected to sign their initials directly on the site to be operated on before the surgery.
  2. If you have a choice, choose a hospital where many patients have had the procedure or surgery you need.
Research shows that patients tend to have better results when they are treated in hospitals that have a great deal of experience with their condition.
Other Steps
  1. Speak up if you have questions or concerns.
You have a right to question anyone who is involved with your care.
  2. Make sure that someone, such as your primary care doctor, coordinates your care.
This is especially important if you have many health problems or are in the hospital.
  3. Make sure that all your doctors have your important health information.
Do not assume that everyone has all the information they need.
  4. Ask a family member or friend to go to appointments with you.
Even if you do not need help now, you might need it later.
  5. Know that "more" is not always better.
It is a good idea to find out why a test or treatment is needed and how it can help you. You could be better off without it.
  6. If you have a test, do not assume that no news is good news.
Ask how and when you will get the results.
  7. Learn about your condition and treatments by asking your doctor and nurse and by using other reliable sources.
For example, treatment options based on the latest scientific evidence are available from the Effective Health Care Web site. Ask your doctor if your treatment is based on the latest evidence.
*The term "doctor" is used in this flier to refer to the person who helps you manage your health care.

Four numbers you need to know for good health

(BPT) - When it comes to health by the numbers, you probably already know to keep an eye on your cholesterol level, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure. But are you aware of another medical marker that directly impacts these others? Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) are markers for the aging of our internal organs, tissues and body systems. Research shows that AGEs are linked to nearly every chronic disease we face today, such as obesity, kidney, heart and eye disease, and dementia.

"While cholesterol, body mass index and blood pressure are familiar and relevant health indicators, AGEs are the critical fourth medical marker that everyone should know," says Pat Baird, registered dietitian and A.G.E. Foundation board member. "AGEs impact how long and how well you live as they age your body from the inside out."

AGEs develop naturally in our body and can be ingested through certain foods, including browned, sugary and processed foods. When people consume too many of these foods, higher than normal levels of AGEs build up in the body's tissues and accelerate the aging process internally.

You can lower AGEs in your diet by avoiding charred and blackened foods, extending cooking time and incorporating more water (e.g., steaming, poaching, boiling) and acidic marinades (e.g., lemon or lime-based) into your food preparation, according to the A.G.E. Foundation. Choosing colorful foods that include healthy iridoids, like noni, blueberries, olives and cranberries as well as consuming the supplemental beverage TruAge Max, can effectively lower AGEs. Additionally, receiving a full eight hours of sleep allows the body to fight AGE accumulation and managing physical and emotional stress curbs the production of AGEs.

"Being aware of these four critical medical markers - cholesterol, body mass index, blood pressure and AGEs - can be the first step to a better and healthier life," says Baird. "Simple lifestyle changes like exercising for 30 minutes a day, eating a healthy diet rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables, quitting smoking and regularly monitoring your health can help to lower or maintain the level of AGEs in your body and reduce your risk for chronic diseases."

How You Can Cure Bad Breath From Stomach Problems

Author: Kelvin Ho
Many people are actually surprised to learn that bad breath doesn\'t always stem from the mouth itself but is caused by digestive disorders and other such issues. Conditions such as acid reflux disease, an obstructed bowel, diverticulitis, and just plain indigestion can cause chronic halitosis. But how are these conditions connected, and better yet, how can you cure bad breath from stomach problems?

Most stomach and digestive conditions that cause bad breath do so because of bacteria and harmful enzymes that get absorbed into the system and then released through the breath. In the case of acid reflux disease, those stomach acids can work their way all the back up into the throat and then are expelled in the breath.

In order to cure bad breath from stomach problems you need to understand what condition you have that\'s causing the problem and then address is appropriately. For instance, if it\'s acid reflux you need to make adjustments to your diet or get some medication to calm those stomach acids. You can\'t cure bad breath from stomach problems by just covering it up with gum or mints; once that smell from these products wear off, the bad breath is still present. If you have chronic indigestion you may want to see your doctor to get diagnosed correctly.

Sometimes just understanding the problem doesn\'t necessarily mean that you can correct it that easily, especially if it\'s a condition that you\'re trying to treat and still have not quite fixed. In order to cure bad breath from stomach problems without being able to fix those problems, you need to make sure that you\'re following a good program of proper oral hygiene. Never neglect brushing and flossing, and of course rinsing afterwards.

You might not be able to cure bad breath from stomach problems by doing this, but you can make sure that it\'s not any worse. Keep yourself adequately hydrated at all times so that you can neutralize stomach acids and help your mouth keep itself clean. Saliva is a great cleanser for the mouth and when your mouth is dry, your breath is going to be worse.

There is no shame in asking your doctor for help in being able to cure bad breath from stomach problems. He or she may have seen this type of problem brought on by your condition before and may be able to recommend a permanent solution.

Outside the pill bottle: 5 simple, drug-free ways to reduce lower back pain

(BPT) - Pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide and one of the main reasons Americans miss work. For example, 31 million Americans experience low-back pain at any given time, according to the American Chiropractic Association, with experts estimating that as many as 80 percent of Americans will experience a back problem at some point in their lives. Meaning it is quite possible you may have symptoms right now.

Dealing with chronic pain in your back, arms or legs can be frustrating and costly. The aches and tenderness can cause you to stop doing the things you love most like playing with your children and participating in your favorite activities, like gardening or golfing, or even doing regular exercise.

"Some people accept lower back pain as a way of life, but it doesn't have to be that way," says Brian Elsemore, who has practiced as a registered physical therapist for a decade in Florida and New England. "There are simple things that everyone can do to treat their pain without resorting to drugs or surgery."

Here are five drug-free steps Elsemore recommends to reduce the pain:

Exercise daily

A body in motion tends to stay in motion, according to Isaac Newton's laws of motion. This notion applies to the human body and back health as well, so fight the urge to sit or lay for lengthy periods. Exercises that maintain the natural spinal curve and help strengthen the core (abdominals, back and pelvic area) to support the spine are key to eliminating back pain naturally. Even if your back is hurting, increasing blood flow and stretching can help provide relief.

Block the pain signals

Technology called Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) has been used for decades by health professionals to safely block nerve pain in patients. Now, this clinically proven, drug-free technology is available without a prescription in an affordable, portable device called Rapid Relief Electronic Pain Relief Pad from HoMedics. Simply apply where it hurts and the discreet pad that easily fits under clothing emits a controlled micro-electronic current through the skin to block the nerves from transmitting pain signals to the body's pain center. The result is fast, effective relief for aches and pains without drugs, creams or messy applications. The device, available in versions calibrated for the lower back as well as the arms/legs, offers 15 levels of adjustable intensity and includes one standard lithium battery, one set of self-adhesive, replaceable gels and a travel storage case. At $29.99, Rapid Relief is one of the lowest cost-per-use topical pain relief options sold without a prescription at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart and Amazon.com. Learn more at RapidReliefPad.com.

Stand, sit and lift smart

Being aware of how you use your back throughout the day is important to reducing lower back pain. When standing, particularly for long periods of time, maintain a neutral pelvic position. Be aware of your posture, keeping the back straight when standing and sitting. Stand up or walk around at least once an hour if you're job requires long periods of sitting. Hunching and poor posture eventually cause soreness. When lifting - whether a load at work or your child at home - let your legs do the work, according to MayoClinic.com. Additional lifting recommendations include bending only at the knees, holding the load close to your body and avoiding lifting and twisting simultaneously.

Evaluate shoes

It's common knowledge that fashionable high heels are terrible for back health, but it's not only stylish shoes that can cause extreme pain. Ill-fitting shoes without proper support can shift a person's center of gravity, causing him or her to walk out of alignment and put undue pressure on the back. To relieve back pain, only wear supportive shoes that fit well. Keep in mind, shoes should never require a "breaking in" period; if they fit correctly, they should be comfortable right away according to the American Podiatric Medical Association.

Sleep well

Sleep is important for overall well-being, allowing the body to recover from daily activities. Inadequate sleep and back pain go hand-in-hand, quickly creating a vicious cycle. To get a good night's sleep and encourage pain relief, it's wise to take a few steps before lights out. Start by placing a pillow under your knees if you sleep on your back or between your knees if you're a side sleeper - this helps reduce stress on the spine. For a firmer, more supportive mattress, place wood supports between the mattress and base, or place the mattress directly on the ground. If back pain still persists, it may be time to go shopping for a new mattress.

"Lower back pain is so prevalent in our society, but drug-free relief is an option for many people," notes Elsemore. "From proper exercise and sleep to relieving pain using innovations like Rapid Relief, a few simple steps can dramatically improve quality of life."

Five Questions to ask Your Doctor about Depression

(BPT) - Have you been feeling sad? Have you lost interest or pleasure in daily activities? Have you been feeling this way for two weeks or more? These feelings/symptoms may be signs of depression and your healthcare provider can help. In this article, you'll find answers to common questions about depression from Dr. Larry Culpepper, a primary care physician and professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Boston University. Take the first step toward regaining control and start a conversation with your doctor about your symptoms. There is no need to suffer alone.
1.---- What is major depressive disorder (MDD)?
Major depressive disorder, also known as depression, is a serious medical condition that can significantly impact your life and the lives of those close to you. Depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, along with other symptoms, are persistent and interfere with one's normal day-to-day activities for a long period of time (nearly every day for at least two weeks). Nearly half of people with MDD are not receiving any treatment and the consequences can be devastating. Some believe they should just "snap out of it" on their own. Others do not discuss depression with a doctor because it doesn't seem like a health concern. It's important to understand that depression is a real medical illness that can be treated.
2.---- What are the symptoms of MDD?
Those suffering from depression may experience different symptoms that go beyond a feeling of sadness. Along with a depressed mood and/or loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities, a person must experience at least four of the following symptoms:Increased irritabilityFeelings of worthlessness or guiltAgitation or restlessnessFatigue and loss of energyTrouble thinking, making decisions, or concentratingDisturbed sleep, such as insomniaChanges in appetite or weightThoughts of death or suicide, suicide attempts
3.---- I may be suffering from MDD. What should I do?
The first thing you should do is schedule an appointment with your doctor to discuss how you're feeling and determine the appropriate next steps. It's important to remember that depression is a common but serious illness. In fact, each year, depression affects 5-8 percent of adults in the United States, accounting for about 25 million Americans.
4.---- Why can't I just snap out of it?
It is widely believed that major depressive disorder is the result of an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain, which may influence a person's mood.Due to this believed imbalance, depression, like other medical conditions, often requires treatment. Many people with a depressive illness never seek treatment, but many people with depression can get better with treatment.
5.---- What types of medications are available?
There are a number of different antidepressant options available that can help reduce symptoms of depression. The antidepressant most recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of depression in adults is VIIBRYD® (vilazodone HCl), which became available in 2011. While the exact way VIIBRYD—or any other medication for depression—works is unknown, it is thought to affect the activity of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter known to play a key role in regulating mood. -Talk to your doctor to determine the best treatment option for you.
-Important Risk Information
VIIBRYD® (vilazodone HCl) is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults.
Important Risk Information
What is the most important information I should know about VIIBRYD?
VIIBRYD and other antidepressant medicines may cause serious side effects. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the symptoms described below, or call 911 if there is an emergency.
Suicidality and Antidepressant Drugs Antidepressants increased the risk compared to placebo of suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, teens, and young adults. Depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with increases in the risk of suicide. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. VIIBRYD is not approved for use in patients under 18. For more information on this risk, please read the VIIBRYD Medication Guide in the accompanying full Prescribing Information. Serotonin Syndrome: Agitation, hallucinations, coma or other changes in mental status; coordination problems or muscle twitching; fast heartbeat, high or low blood pressure; sweating or fever; nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; muscle stiffness or tightness. Abnormal bleeding: VIIBRYD and other antidepressant medicines may increase your risk of bleeding or bruising, especially if you take the blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®), a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), or aspirin. Seizures or convulsions. Manic episodes: Greatly increased energy; severe trouble sleeping; racing thoughts; reckless behavior; unusually grand ideas; excessive happiness or irritability; talking more or faster than usual. Low salt (sodium) levels in the blood: Elderly people may be at greater risk for this. Symptoms may include headache; weakness or feeling unsteady; confusion, problems concentrating or thinking or memory problems.
Who should not take VIIBRYD?
Do not take any drugs known as MAOIs within 14 days of stopping VIIBRYDDo not start VIIBRYD if you stopped taking an MAOI in the last 14 daysDo not start VIIBRYD if you are taking linezolid (a specific antibiotic) or are receiving intravenous methylene blue
People who take VIIBRYD close in time to taking an MAOI may have serious or even life-threatening side effects.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before starting VIIBRYD?
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements you are taking or plan to take, including: — Triptans used to treat migraine headaches; medicines used to treat mood, anxiety, psychotic or thought disorders, including tricyclics, lithium, SSRIs, SNRIs, buspirone, or antipsychotics; tramadol, mephenytoin (Mesantoin) or over-the-counter supplements such as tryptophan or St. John's Wort; this is necessary to avoid a potentially life-threatening condition — Aspirin, NSAID pain relievers, or blood thinners (warfarin, Coumadin, or Jantoven) because they may increase the risk of bleedingSpeak with your doctor if you: --------- Have kidney or liver problems --------- Have or had mania, bipolar disorder (manic depression), seizures or convulsions --------- Have or had bleeding problems. VIIBRYD may increase your risk of bleeding or bruising --------- Have low salt (sodium) levels in your blood or are taking diuretics (water pills) --------- Are nursing, pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant or to breastfeed
Do not stop VIIBRYD without first talking to your healthcare provider.
Stopping VIIBRYD suddenly may cause serious symptoms including: anxiety, irritability, high or low mood, feeling restless or sleepy; headache, sweating, nausea, dizziness; electric shock-like sensations, tremor, and confusion.
What should I avoid when taking VIIBRYD?
Until you know how VIIBRYD affects you, you should not drive, operate heavy machinery, or engage in other dangerous activities. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking VIIBRYD.
What are the most common side effects of VIIBRYD?
The most common side effects in people taking VIIBRYD include diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, and trouble sleeping.Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.---------------------------------------------------------
These are not all the possible side effects of VIIBRYD. For more information, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.-
Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
