The Benefits of Slumber

Why You Need a Good Night’s Sleep

We have so many demands on our time—jobs, family, errands—not to mention finding some time to relax.
To fit everything in, we often sacrifice sleep. But sleep affects both mental and physical health. It’s vital to your well-being.

Of course, sleep helps you feel rested each day. But while you’re sleeping, your brain and body don’t just shut down. Internal organs and processes are hard at work throughout the night.

“Sleep services all aspects of our body in one way or another: molecular, energy balance, as well as intellectual function, alertness and mood,” says Dr. Merrill Mitler, a sleep expert and neuroscientist at NIH.
When you’re tired, you can’t function at your best. Sleep helps you think more clearly, have quicker reflexes and focus better. “The fact is, when we look at well-rested people, they’re operating at a different level than people trying to get by on 1 or 2 hours less nightly sleep,” says Mitler.

“Loss of sleep impairs your higher levels of reasoning, problem-solving and attention to detail,” Mitler explains. Tired people tend to be less productive at work. They’re at a much higher risk for traffic accidents. Lack of sleep also influences your mood, which can affect how you interact with others. A sleep deficit over time can even put you at greater risk for developing depression.

But sleep isn’t just essential for the brain. “Sleep affects almost every tissue in our bodies,” says Dr. Michael Twery, a sleep expert at NIH. “It affects growth and stress hormones, our immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure and cardiovascular health.”

Research shows that lack of sleep increases the risk for obesity, heart disease and infections. Throughout the night, your heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure rise and fall, a process that may be important for cardiovascular health. Your body releases hormones during sleep that help repair cells and control the body’s use of energy. These hormone changes can affect your body weight.

“Ongoing research shows a lack of sleep can produce diabetic-like conditions in otherwise healthy people,” says Mitler.

Recent studies also reveal that sleep can affect the efficiency of vaccinations. Twery described research showing that well-rested people who received the flu vaccine developed stronger protection against the illness.

A good night’s sleep consists of 4 to 5 sleep cycles. Each cycle includes periods of deep sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when we dream. “As the night goes on, the portion of that cycle that is in REM sleep increases. It turns out that this pattern of cycling and progression is critical to the biology of sleep,” Twery says.

Although personal needs vary, on average, adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Babies typically sleep about 16 hours a day. Young children need at least 10 hours of sleep, while teenagers need at least 9 hours. To attain the maximum restorative benefits of sleep, getting a full night of quality sleep is important, says Twery.

Sleep can be disrupted by many things. Stimulants such as caffeine or certain medications can keep you up. Distractions such as electronics—especially the light from TVs, cell phones, tablets and e-readers—can prevent you from falling asleep.

As people get older, they may not get enough sleep because of illness, medications or sleep disorders. By some estimates, about 70 million Americans of all ages suffer from chronic sleep problems. The 2 most common sleep disorders are insomnia and sleep apnea.

People with insomnia have trouble falling or staying asleep. Anxiety about falling asleep often makes the condition worse. Most of us have occasional insomnia. But chronic insomnia—lasting at least 3 nights per week for more than a month—can trigger serious daytime problems such as exhaustion, irritability and difficulty concentrating.

Common therapies include relaxation and deep-breathing techniques. Sometimes medicine is prescribed. But consult a doctor before trying even over-the-counter sleep pills, as they may leave you feeling unrefreshed in the morning.

People with sleep apnea have a loud, uneven snore (although not everyone who snores has apnea). Breathing repeatedly stops or becomes shallow. If you have apnea, you’re not getting enough oxygen, and your brain disturbs your sleep to open your windpipe.

Apnea is dangerous. “There’s little air exchange for 10 seconds or more at a time,” explains Dr. Phyllis Zee, a sleep apnea expert at Northwestern University. “The oxygen goes down and the body’s fight or flight response is activated. Blood pressure spikes, your heart rate fluctuates and the brain wakes you up partially to start your breathing again. This creates stress.”

Apnea can leave you feeling tired and moody. You may have trouble thinking clearly. “Also, apnea affects the vessels that lead to the brain so there is a higher risk of stroke associated with it,” Zee adds.
If you have mild sleep apnea, you might try sleeping on your side, exercising or losing weight to reduce symptoms. A CPAP machine, which pumps air into your throat to keep your airway open, can also help. Another treatment is a bite plate that moves the lower jaw forward. In some cases, however, people with sleep apnea need surgery.

“If you snore chronically and wake up choking or gasping for air, and feel that you’re sleepy during the day, tell your doctor and get evaluated,” Zee advises.
NIH is currently funding several studies to gain deeper insights into sleep apnea and other aspects of sleep. One 5-year study of 10,000 pregnant women is designed to gauge the effects of apnea on the mother’s and baby’s health. Zee says this study will shed more light on apnea and the importance of treatment.
Good sleep is critical to your health. To make each day a safe, productive one, take steps to make sure you regularly get a good night’s sleep.

FAQs About Polio

What is polio?
Polio is a contagious disease that is caused by poliomyelitis virus. Polio virus lives in the intestinal tract and in the throat. The virus is usually spread when you come in contact with the stool of an infected person. Also, albeit to a smaller degree, the virus is also spread through nasal secretions. After infection, the signs take about 21 days to one month before they show.
What happens when the virus gets in the body?
Polio gets in the body through the mouth. Once it gets in the mouth, it spreads to the intestinal mucus and into the throat. After this, the virus corrupts body cells and begins to replicate. Within a week or two after entry, the virus replicates in high amounts and is absorbed in the blood stream. In some cases, the virus affects tissues in the brain resulting to paralysis.
Which are the Symptoms of polio?
According to research, over 70% of infected people usually don't show disease symptoms. Although, these people don't show the symptoms, they pose great danger of spreading the disease. Research goes further to show that over 20% of infected people show minor symptoms such as sore throat, stomach upset, and fever. It's good to note that this percentage of people usually don't have paralysis or other serious symptoms.
About 1-6% of the people develop more severe symptoms such as aseptic meningitis which is accompanied by back, neck and leg stiffness. These symptoms usually last for two to ten days after which complete recovery ensues. Although, polio is associated with paralysis, it's good to note that those who develop paralysis are usually less than 1%.
What is polio vaccine?
This is an attenuated virus which cannot affect the body. There are currently two polio vaccines which are used to give your body immunity against the virus. The vaccines are usually given to young kids in three doses at 6, 10, and 14 weeks. After being given the vaccine, the kids develop antibodies which protect them against the polio virus.
How can I treat polio?
Sadly, there is no cure for polio. Like many viral diseases, polio can only be prevented from entering the body by use of vaccines. Once the virus is the body, it can't be eliminated. The good news is that modern treatment can give you some medications such as antibiotics, pain reliever and a healthy diet which aid in giving you relief from the symptoms.

Plano Dentist – Dental Health Tips For A Brighter Smile

Image courtesy of [stock images] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Author: Kathy Harper
Society places great importance on the appearance of one\'s smile. Many people work hard to obtain whiter and brighter teeth. A person\'s smile is often the primary characteristic noticed in first impressions. Therefore, caring for your teeth and taking part in good dental health practices should be an essential part of personal hygiene. There are a variety of dental health tips that one can take to create a more beautiful smile.

Choosing a Toothbrush
Everyone is aware that they need to brush their teeth regularly. However, few people understand the importance of choosing a proper toothbrush. Many believe that as long as they brush, they will have healthy teeth. However, the brush that you choose has much to do with how effective your brushing will be. When looking for a toothbrush, choose one that has a head of around 1 inch in length and a rounded appearance. The bristles should be soft and not cause damage to the gums. Avoid brushes that feel abrasive and can irritate the mouth. The average adult needs a brush with four rows of bristles while those with smaller mouths and children need a brush with three rows of bristles.

If the correct toothbrush is not chosen, the gums can become irritated and sore. This leaves the gums more susceptible to being attacked by gum disease. People with sore gums are also less likely to care for their teeth through regular brushing and floss due to the pain.

Visit a Dentist
Good dental hygiene also includes regular visits to a dentist. Gum disease is a common occurrence in adults. The reduction of plaque on the teeth during check-ups will reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth. Thus, the likelihood of gum disease also lessens. During regular check-ups, the dentist can examine the mouth for any signs of potential problems and stop them before they occur or worsen.

Use Mouth Wash
Studies show that rinsing your mouth with a fluoride mouthwash can give you added protection when it comes to tooth decay. Using a fluoride rinse is especially critical for those living in areas where fluoride is not added into the water supply.

Floss Between Teeth
While people know that they need to floss, not many people actually do it. Brushing alone will not remove the food particles that are stuck between the teeth. If left, these particles will cause plaque and tooth decay. In addition to preventing cavities, flossing can also reduce the chance of developing periodontal disease, which often leads to tooth loss in adults. For a healthy mouth, you should floss at least once a day. Most people floss before bedtime after all foods has been consumed for the day.

Properly caring for your teeth and following good dental health tips are essential in having a bright and white smile. Good teeth and gum hygiene should be carried out on a daily basis. Bacteria can begin to cause plaque within 24 hours of remaining in the mouth. Without removing the bacteria, tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities begin to form. Rotten or poorly kept teeth are very unsightly when it comes to meeting and talking to others. Damaged teeth and gums can also be very painful and make eating and drinking near impossible. Dental visits to correct the effects of poor dental health are very costly. Therefore, caring for your teeth while they are healthy is the best, most affordable, and easiest option available.

Why is Skipping is Good Exercise?

By: Keith Colladow

The vast majority of the exercising population is working out for one reason and one reason only; weight
control. Being inactive at work, spending excessive time sat down in your home and consuming excessive amounts of the incorrect kind of foods has actually left a sizable percent of the population considerably over weight as well as obese. It's not simply adults that are experiencing this problem either; children are getting fatter as well.

Being overly fat is not simply an aesthetic problem; it could detrimentally impact your health and quality of life. Things are getting so bad that the World Health Organization (WHO) have appeared and said that weight problems is an epidemic that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Research suggests that being overweight could also take years off of your expected life-span so, overall, it's not surprising that that many of us are trying our hardest to slim down and get fit.

Slimming down is as much about diet as it is exercise so it's important that, if you intend to lose a few (or a lot of) pounds, you switch the sugary soft drinks for water and kick the junk food into touch in favor of more vegetables and lean protein. It is, after all, impossible to out exercise a bad diet. However, when your diet is arranged it's time to start working up a sweat and burn some calories.

Ideally, you should be active most days of the week. Our ancestors worked the land, walked for transport and did manual work yet many of us now spend our time sat at workdesks or in comfy chairs in front of the TV. To balance out an otherwise inactive way of life you should embrace an activity that you could fit seamlessly into your way of life and perform anytime you have a few minutes spare. While you could join a gym, heading off for a workout at your local fitness palace could take a large part out of your day and if you are going to exercise daily, as you should, maybe this isn't really the best option.

As an alternative, how about purchasing yourself a speed rope and skipping for a few minutes daily? Other than your rope, you do not require any type of special equipment or clothing, you can jump rope pretty much any way and any time and skipping is an incredible calorie burner-- easily comparable to jogging, swimming or hitting the fitness center. Because skipping uses each of your big muscles and is a weight-bearing task, it develops not just your fitness and helps you burn fat but also strengthens your bones and enhances your balance and coordination. Skipping is an extremely effective exercise!

So how many calories does skipping burn? Excellent question! The answer relies on a couple of factors including how heavy you are and how quick you skip but a typical, moderately competent rope jumper could expect to burn approximately 220 calories in 15 minutes. Jump rope for longer or faster and this number shoots up considerably.

When it comes to burning calories for weight loss, jumping rope is effective, convenient, easy to learn and very accessible. Fighters have made use of skipping to help them lose excess weight for over one hundred years so if it helps these elite athletes, you know it'll work for you.
Keith Colladow is a personal trainer and fitness lecturer. If you want the best speed skipping rope for your fitness check out these: Best Jump Rope Reviews. And this video: Jump Rope Reviews for Best Weight Loss & Fitness Benefits

Helping and recognizing alcohol abuse

This transition can happen within months, and sometimes, it may take longer.
Alcoholism doesn\'t discriminate.  It affects all ages, races, and social classes.
Typically, alcohol abuse sets in when a loved one needs a mental escape. Used as a coping mechanism, some rely on alcohol to avoid a past memory, their present reality, or what tomorrow may bring.
If a loved one is using liquor to temporarily numb these types of feelings than this definitely is a sign of concern.  The person drinking may not be able to recognize the danger of their current situation; and, more times than not, need assistance in recognizing the problem.

After acknowledging a loved one is abusing alcohol, one may become keenly aware of their personal emotions emerging such as:
  • Guilt
  • Remorse
  • Fear
  • Sadness
  • Self-Blame
All this self-realization feelings are normal.
Some family members or close friends may also go through a denial process, as well. Facing such a painful issue regarding someone with a drinking problem can be overwhelming.  Turning away from the reality may be the first 'knee-jerk' reaction.
This immediate 'denial response' can inevitably cause more turmoil for the alcohol abuser, family members, friends and co-workers.
The most important thing to remember is there is support out there.  Yes, there is help during this emotional rollercoaster ride. A vital part to helping an alcohol abuser is by also getting personal support.
Having one person or a group of people who 'have gone through' or are 'going through' the same challenges to talk with is essential.
The well-regarded group, Al-Anon, offers free peer support group for loved ones managing with alcoholism in their family.  Al-Anon members find comfort among one another because everyone there is dealing with similar issues.

This above support network will share valuable tools regarding how to deal with someone who has an alcohol problem such as:
  • A loved one will not stop drinking from sheer force by family or friends – the decision to stop drinking is a personal one
  • Refrain from giving threats or casting blame
  • When a loved one is alcohol impaired, pull away from any serious discussions regarding alcohol abuse
  • Let the loved one face and be responsible for their daily responsibilities
  • Once a loved one comes to terms with their drinking problem the alcoholism doesn\'t go away-- they will need multimodal rehabilitation treatment.
  • Following rehabilitation, continuing support is needed as the recovery from alcoholism is very much a journey.
Some family and friends do their best to shield their loved ones from places where alcohol is present.  At first thought, this may seem to be an excellent idea, but in actuality it is generally of no help.
The hardest part in this whole situation is coming to terms that a loved one has an alcohol problem.  It\'s a disease which affects the entire family.
Support groups and leaning on help from caring professionals will make a positive impact during this challenging time.  This network of support paves a smoother pathway toward the recovery journey.

Check recommended tests that would help your health

Five tips to avoid holiday weight gain

(BPT) - Who doesn't love the smell of a warm kitchen during the holidays? They're designed around food and bringing family, old friends and new friends together. However, holidays can also be a detriment to your healthy lifestyle and cause you to lose your focus through the end of the year. -

But they don't have to.

"Think of fall as the perfect time to reassess the state of your health and prep for the challenges of the holiday season," says Alicia Rodriguez, corporate registered dietician at Life Time - The Health Way of Life Company. "When it comes to nutrition and avoiding weight gain, my motto is, keep it simple and easy."

Here are some tips to help you do the same.

Bulk up your plate with protein and vegetables

The side dishes at most holiday meals are often as good as the turkey or ham, but stuffing and mashed potatoes aren't the best way to fill your plate. One way to avoid-weight gain is to build your plate with protein. This should be easy since holiday dinners revolve around meat. Second, fill your plate with side dishes that include vegetables. You may have a little spot left on your plate - use this space for your "indulgence." When you look at your plate, the goal is that the majority is still providing you with good nutrients and reduced carbohydrates.

Use the "fork" trick

Many of us go back for seconds, and even third helpings at holiday meals. This year, focus on asking yourself if you're enjoying your food. To help you answer this question, use the fork trick. Once you take a bite of food, place your fork down on the plate and let it go. Chew your food, swallow and then pick it up again. The key to this trick is letting go of the fork. This will remind you to slow down, enjoy your food and converse with friends and family.

Avoid the clean plate club

Growing up, many of us were always told "You can't leave the table until you finish everything on your plate" and inevitably, we spent many nights sitting alone at the dinner table. These days, Rodriguez advises her clients to eat until they are full and, if their plate is not clean, it's OK. Focus on one plate of food, slow down and be careful not to overeat. Overfeeding is never really a healthy thing to do.

Share your dessert with a loved one

After a satisfying meal, it is hard to avoid the sweet smells of pumpkin -or warm apple pie. If you choose not to skip dessert, share a small slice with a loved one or new friend. If you are hosting, designate one family member to bring dessert to limit the endless selection of pies and reduce the urge to over indulge.

Make like a turkey and trot out the door

Start your holiday with a new tradition this year and gather the family to do something active. Take a walk to a local park, put together a family friendly flag football game, rake the leaves up in the yard (and jump into them) or encourage the family to sign up for a run/walk event such as the Life Time Turkey Day 5K or Commitment Day 2014.

Holidays are a time to be thankful for family, friends and everything in between. Savor the moment, really take time to taste your food, get out and have some fun, and avoid the-holiday weight gain.

As simple as business process of fast food may appear,it is a big business worldwide valued at 102.4 billion dollars in 2006.It is so heavily advertised and cheap but unfortunately can be unhealthy. Some even believe that if tobacco could be controlled, why not fast food?

The question is, how can this fast food which is delicious and easily available especially in urban areas be unhealthy? The adverse effect of fast food stems from the fact that it has high fat content and a lot of trans-fat,poor caloric content, high refined sugar content and in some cases the portion size.

It must be noted that occasional fast food intake or patronage may have none or little  danger however addiction to fast food is a bad habit and could be risky.Combined with decrease in physical activities which is common among white collar workers who patronise fast-food joint most is even worst.Really frequent or total fast-food diet constitute a very serious health problem.

Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Nutrition says fast food is high on fat content and is established that high fast food intake can lead to increased body mass index and weight gain. Also David Ludwig,Director of Children 's Hospital,Boston claimed fast food consumption leads to increase the risk of Diabetes Mellitus. If an individual become obese,he/she has increased chance of developing hypertension or Diabetes Mellitus.

Interestingly, an American-Caesar Barber took the fast food giants into a legal battle. He was popular for attempting to sue Fast food chains like MacDonalds,Burger King,Wendy's and KFC for making him addicted to their food and making him overweight.

In addition in "Supersize me" a documentary depicted a man that dined on fast food for entire month which resulted in tens of pound weight gain.Excessive fast food leads to being overweight which subsequently lead to diabetes mellitus, hypertension and excess lipids in the system.

Eating Fast Food regularly has been found to increase weight. A British Researcher from the Medical Council, Human Nutrition Centre and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine discovered that eating fast food from some fast-food joints is likely to cause weight gain and obesity. This is due to the caloric content of fast-food which is higher than traditional food. Not only that, it undermines normal appetite control system. Therefore, an individual is likely to consume more.

Another important observation was that by eating Mac and fries, the body consumes almost twice as much calories as much you would if you would if you eat the same weight of pasta and salad.Someone dining totally on fast food would surely be pushing more calories into his body than can be burn. “A regular meal at Mac Donald consist of Big Mac,fries and a large coca-cola drink amounting to 1430 calories” That is more than 70% of what of what an average person needs in a day! In one meal you take that swoop!

Most fast foods are low in fibre content causing frequent constipation, increase predisposition to obesity and diverticulitis.

Furthermore, in Eric Schlosser’s book “Fast Food Nation: Dark Side of All American meal” he pointed out the risk of large scale food poisoning that could arise from fast food joints. This poisoning is by organism like Salmonella spp and Escherica coli. These risks may only reduce through strict regulatory monitoring bodies like NAFDAC in Nigeria and FDA in USA.

Occasional fast food may mean no harm but regular dining on fast food may lead to developing of obesity, hypertension and diabetes mellitus etc These diseases arise slowly with attendant serious consequences.Unfortunately, globally we are having a global and impeding epidemic running side by side with a fast food culture by persistent nad heavy advertisement.Who shall save us?
