FAQs About Polio

What is polio?
Polio is a contagious disease that is caused by poliomyelitis virus. Polio virus lives in the intestinal tract and in the throat. The virus is usually spread when you come in contact with the stool of an infected person. Also, albeit to a smaller degree, the virus is also spread through nasal secretions. After infection, the signs take about 21 days to one month before they show.
What happens when the virus gets in the body?
Polio gets in the body through the mouth. Once it gets in the mouth, it spreads to the intestinal mucus and into the throat. After this, the virus corrupts body cells and begins to replicate. Within a week or two after entry, the virus replicates in high amounts and is absorbed in the blood stream. In some cases, the virus affects tissues in the brain resulting to paralysis.
Which are the Symptoms of polio?
According to research, over 70% of infected people usually don't show disease symptoms. Although, these people don't show the symptoms, they pose great danger of spreading the disease. Research goes further to show that over 20% of infected people show minor symptoms such as sore throat, stomach upset, and fever. It's good to note that this percentage of people usually don't have paralysis or other serious symptoms.
About 1-6% of the people develop more severe symptoms such as aseptic meningitis which is accompanied by back, neck and leg stiffness. These symptoms usually last for two to ten days after which complete recovery ensues. Although, polio is associated with paralysis, it's good to note that those who develop paralysis are usually less than 1%.
What is polio vaccine?
This is an attenuated virus which cannot affect the body. There are currently two polio vaccines which are used to give your body immunity against the virus. The vaccines are usually given to young kids in three doses at 6, 10, and 14 weeks. After being given the vaccine, the kids develop antibodies which protect them against the polio virus.
How can I treat polio?
Sadly, there is no cure for polio. Like many viral diseases, polio can only be prevented from entering the body by use of vaccines. Once the virus is the body, it can't be eliminated. The good news is that modern treatment can give you some medications such as antibiotics, pain reliever and a healthy diet which aid in giving you relief from the symptoms.

Plano Dentist – Dental Health Tips For A Brighter Smile

Image courtesy of [stock images] / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Author: Kathy Harper
Society places great importance on the appearance of one\'s smile. Many people work hard to obtain whiter and brighter teeth. A person\'s smile is often the primary characteristic noticed in first impressions. Therefore, caring for your teeth and taking part in good dental health practices should be an essential part of personal hygiene. There are a variety of dental health tips that one can take to create a more beautiful smile.

Choosing a Toothbrush
Everyone is aware that they need to brush their teeth regularly. However, few people understand the importance of choosing a proper toothbrush. Many believe that as long as they brush, they will have healthy teeth. However, the brush that you choose has much to do with how effective your brushing will be. When looking for a toothbrush, choose one that has a head of around 1 inch in length and a rounded appearance. The bristles should be soft and not cause damage to the gums. Avoid brushes that feel abrasive and can irritate the mouth. The average adult needs a brush with four rows of bristles while those with smaller mouths and children need a brush with three rows of bristles.

If the correct toothbrush is not chosen, the gums can become irritated and sore. This leaves the gums more susceptible to being attacked by gum disease. People with sore gums are also less likely to care for their teeth through regular brushing and floss due to the pain.

Visit a Dentist
Good dental hygiene also includes regular visits to a dentist. Gum disease is a common occurrence in adults. The reduction of plaque on the teeth during check-ups will reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth. Thus, the likelihood of gum disease also lessens. During regular check-ups, the dentist can examine the mouth for any signs of potential problems and stop them before they occur or worsen.

Use Mouth Wash
Studies show that rinsing your mouth with a fluoride mouthwash can give you added protection when it comes to tooth decay. Using a fluoride rinse is especially critical for those living in areas where fluoride is not added into the water supply.

Floss Between Teeth
While people know that they need to floss, not many people actually do it. Brushing alone will not remove the food particles that are stuck between the teeth. If left, these particles will cause plaque and tooth decay. In addition to preventing cavities, flossing can also reduce the chance of developing periodontal disease, which often leads to tooth loss in adults. For a healthy mouth, you should floss at least once a day. Most people floss before bedtime after all foods has been consumed for the day.

Properly caring for your teeth and following good dental health tips are essential in having a bright and white smile. Good teeth and gum hygiene should be carried out on a daily basis. Bacteria can begin to cause plaque within 24 hours of remaining in the mouth. Without removing the bacteria, tooth decay, gum disease, and cavities begin to form. Rotten or poorly kept teeth are very unsightly when it comes to meeting and talking to others. Damaged teeth and gums can also be very painful and make eating and drinking near impossible. Dental visits to correct the effects of poor dental health are very costly. Therefore, caring for your teeth while they are healthy is the best, most affordable, and easiest option available.

Why is Skipping is Good Exercise?

By: Keith Colladow

The vast majority of the exercising population is working out for one reason and one reason only; weight
control. Being inactive at work, spending excessive time sat down in your home and consuming excessive amounts of the incorrect kind of foods has actually left a sizable percent of the population considerably over weight as well as obese. It's not simply adults that are experiencing this problem either; children are getting fatter as well.

Being overly fat is not simply an aesthetic problem; it could detrimentally impact your health and quality of life. Things are getting so bad that the World Health Organization (WHO) have appeared and said that weight problems is an epidemic that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Research suggests that being overweight could also take years off of your expected life-span so, overall, it's not surprising that that many of us are trying our hardest to slim down and get fit.

Slimming down is as much about diet as it is exercise so it's important that, if you intend to lose a few (or a lot of) pounds, you switch the sugary soft drinks for water and kick the junk food into touch in favor of more vegetables and lean protein. It is, after all, impossible to out exercise a bad diet. However, when your diet is arranged it's time to start working up a sweat and burn some calories.

Ideally, you should be active most days of the week. Our ancestors worked the land, walked for transport and did manual work yet many of us now spend our time sat at workdesks or in comfy chairs in front of the TV. To balance out an otherwise inactive way of life you should embrace an activity that you could fit seamlessly into your way of life and perform anytime you have a few minutes spare. While you could join a gym, heading off for a workout at your local fitness palace could take a large part out of your day and if you are going to exercise daily, as you should, maybe this isn't really the best option.

As an alternative, how about purchasing yourself a speed rope and skipping for a few minutes daily? Other than your rope, you do not require any type of special equipment or clothing, you can jump rope pretty much any way and any time and skipping is an incredible calorie burner-- easily comparable to jogging, swimming or hitting the fitness center. Because skipping uses each of your big muscles and is a weight-bearing task, it develops not just your fitness and helps you burn fat but also strengthens your bones and enhances your balance and coordination. Skipping is an extremely effective exercise!

So how many calories does skipping burn? Excellent question! The answer relies on a couple of factors including how heavy you are and how quick you skip but a typical, moderately competent rope jumper could expect to burn approximately 220 calories in 15 minutes. Jump rope for longer or faster and this number shoots up considerably.

When it comes to burning calories for weight loss, jumping rope is effective, convenient, easy to learn and very accessible. Fighters have made use of skipping to help them lose excess weight for over one hundred years so if it helps these elite athletes, you know it'll work for you.

Helping and recognizing alcohol abuse

This transition can happen within months, and sometimes, it may take longer.
Alcoholism doesn\'t discriminate.  It affects all ages, races, and social classes.
Typically, alcohol abuse sets in when a loved one needs a mental escape. Used as a coping mechanism, some rely on alcohol to avoid a past memory, their present reality, or what tomorrow may bring.
If a loved one is using liquor to temporarily numb these types of feelings than this definitely is a sign of concern.  The person drinking may not be able to recognize the danger of their current situation; and, more times than not, need assistance in recognizing the problem.

After acknowledging a loved one is abusing alcohol, one may become keenly aware of their personal emotions emerging such as:
  • Guilt
  • Remorse
  • Fear
  • Sadness
  • Self-Blame
All this self-realization feelings are normal.
Some family members or close friends may also go through a denial process, as well. Facing such a painful issue regarding someone with a drinking problem can be overwhelming.  Turning away from the reality may be the first 'knee-jerk' reaction.
This immediate 'denial response' can inevitably cause more turmoil for the alcohol abuser, family members, friends and co-workers.
The most important thing to remember is there is support out there.  Yes, there is help during this emotional rollercoaster ride. A vital part to helping an alcohol abuser is by also getting personal support.
Having one person or a group of people who 'have gone through' or are 'going through' the same challenges to talk with is essential.
The well-regarded group, Al-Anon, offers free peer support group for loved ones managing with alcoholism in their family.  Al-Anon members find comfort among one another because everyone there is dealing with similar issues.

This above support network will share valuable tools regarding how to deal with someone who has an alcohol problem such as:
  • A loved one will not stop drinking from sheer force by family or friends – the decision to stop drinking is a personal one
  • Refrain from giving threats or casting blame
  • When a loved one is alcohol impaired, pull away from any serious discussions regarding alcohol abuse
  • Let the loved one face and be responsible for their daily responsibilities
  • Once a loved one comes to terms with their drinking problem the alcoholism doesn\'t go away-- they will need multimodal rehabilitation treatment.
  • Following rehabilitation, continuing support is needed as the recovery from alcoholism is very much a journey.
Some family and friends do their best to shield their loved ones from places where alcohol is present.  At first thought, this may seem to be an excellent idea, but in actuality it is generally of no help.
The hardest part in this whole situation is coming to terms that a loved one has an alcohol problem.  It\'s a disease which affects the entire family.
Support groups and leaning on help from caring professionals will make a positive impact during this challenging time.  This network of support paves a smoother pathway toward the recovery journey.
